Duo

Google’s Duo video calling app has been around for a few years now and is regarded as being one of the best options for Android if you’re looking for a quick and easy video calling platform. It’s technically been cross-platform for a while now with the iSO app, but good luck getting your Apple-using friends to install it.

Today, Google expanded its reach with Due by making it available on computers through a web browser. Due is currently compatible with Windows and Mac devices and will work in Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Microsoft Edge isn’t currently supported, but we could see that browser added to the list in the future. Similar to the Android and iOS apps, Duo for the web allows you to place and receive voice or video calls, just as long as both users are already registered with Duo.

Follow the instructions below to make or receive a Duo video or voice call from your computer’s web browser

How to place a Duo video call from your computer

  • Open your web browser (Chrome, Safari or Firefox) and navigate to duo.google.com
  • Log into your Google account
  • When prompted, select yes to allow Duo to send notifications to your browser
  • Select a contact and choose voice or video call

To receive Google Duo calls on your computer, you simply need to have your web browser open. When someone calls you through Duo, a browser notification will appear, allowing you to answer the call through the computer browser. Duo will also ring your phone at the same time, so you will have the option to choose which device you want to answer the voice or video call with.

Duo for Office 365 (O365) is now being offered to all faculty and staff, as well as students who access HIPAA data. Duo 2-factor authentication is the recommended method of helping to prevent unauthorized access to your email, One Drive, SharePoint, and other O365 services.

What you need to know before signing up

Duo for O365 only works with applications that allow for what is called modern authentication. IS&T teams from several departments have tested and approved the following applications for use with Duo:

  • Outlook 2016, 2019 and Office 365 ProPlus for Windows, Outlook 2016, 2019 and Office 365 ProPlus for Mac
  • Outlook 2013 for Windows (however it requires a registry edit before it will work)
  • Outlook app for iOS and Android (phone and tablet)
  • Apple Mail app for iOS (default email application for iPhone & iPad)
  • Apple Mail for OS X (must be Mac OS 10.14 (Mojave) or higher, your existing account will need to be deleted and re-added after you have signed up for Duo)
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Microsoft Teams Web app using Chrome or Edge
  • Microsoft Office Web Apps for Internet Explorer, Edge, Chrome, Safari and Firefox
  • OneDrive for Business Sync Client

If you use any of the applications above, please sign up for Duo for O365.

The following applications will NOT work with Duo for O365, as they do not provide for modern authentication:

Mac
  • Outlook for PC 2010 and prior
  • Outlook 2011 for Mac and all versions of MS Entourage
  • Apple Mail for OS X laptop or desktop, versions 10.13 and prior
  • Android Mail (native mail app for phone and tablet)
  • Thunderbird, Pine, Eurdora, etc.

If you sign up for Duo and try to use any of the above applications, you will not be able to receive your mail at all, the application will fail to connect.

If you have multiple BU O365 email accounts that you manage thru Outlook, we do not recommend switching to Duo at this time. If the only BU O365 email account you have is your primary BU work account, then you should not encounter any issues.

Reminder: If you have Duo linked to your office phone (rather than the Duo app on your mobile device) and you are away from your office, you will be unable to sign on to Office 365 and access your email, One Drive, etc. We recommend that you use the Duo app on a mobile device when signing up for Duo for O365.

Troubleshooting

Duo For Mac Os X

The most common troubleshooting steps can be found below. Please note that once your account has been enabled for Duo, depending on the application you are using to connect to Office365, you may not get prompted to authenticate with Duo for a few days or longer. This is because the credentials you use to authenticate may already be cached by the application.
